Cuba's Food Innovations

Cuba’s ongoing advances in both urban agriculture and cooperative formation are now more open to visitors and shared knowledge. See this recent discussion: http://sustainablefoodtrust.org/articles/viva-la-produccion-urban-farming-in-cuba/.  For additional background, see this report from 2015: http://www.grocer.coop/articles/be-happy-achieve-solidarity.

Cuba devotes 3.5 percent of all urban space to growing food, with Havana dedicating an impressive 8 percent of its land to agriculture. Most agriculture production and marketing is now in the hands of cooperatives. Organic production and cooperative development also offer promising areas of collaboration with North Americans. Travel and commercial relations are slowly expanding despite the continuing U.S. boycott.
